Fever: When Is It Normal and When Should You See a Doctor?
Category: General medicine
Fever largely depends on what is causing it. In most cases, fever is caused by viral infections. Viral fevers are very common and usually last for three to four days. During this period, it is normal for a person to experience mild to moderate fever.
Common symptoms of viral fever
When fever is due to a viral infection, it is often accompanied by symptoms such as:
- Cold and cough
- Sore throat or throat irritation
- Sneezing and runny nose
- Body ache and fatigue
- General weakness
In such cases, rest, adequate hydration, and paracetamol for fever control are usually sufficient for the first three days.
Importance of hydration
Even if appetite is low during fever, it is extremely important to maintain fluid intake. Ideally, one should consume at least 2 to 2.5 litres of fluids daily, preferably in the form of water or clear liquids, to prevent dehydration and support recovery.
When should you consult a doctor?
Medical consultation becomes necessary if:
- Fever lasts more than four days
- Fever increases on the third or fourth day instead of reducing
- Severe chills develop
- Breathing difficulty occurs
- Excessive dizziness or weakness is present
- New or worsening symptoms appear
These signs may indicate that the fever is not purely viral and requires further medical evaluation.
Key takeaway
Most viral fevers settle within a few days with rest, fluids, and basic fever management. However, persistent or worsening fever should never be ignored. Timely medical advice helps prevent complications and ensures proper treatment.
