Acidity, Heartburn, and the Confusion Around “Pitta”
Category: Gastroenterologist
Acidity and heartburn are among the most common complaints seen in clinical practice, yet they are also some of the most misunderstood. Many patients describe their symptoms using the term “pitta” or “amlapitta”, assuming it explains everything they are experiencing. However, this often creates confusion and can delay accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
In Indian and Maharashtrian culture, Ayurvedic terminology has a strong influence on how people describe health problems. As a result, patients often come to the doctor already convinced of a diagnosis, rather than explaining what they are actually feeling.
What do patients really mean by “acidity” or “pitta”?
Different patients use the same word—pitta—to describe very different symptoms. Some associate it with:
- Burning sensation in the chest (heartburn)
- Pain or burning in the stomach
- Loose motions or diarrhea
- Constipation
- Bloating or abdominal discomfort
- Headache, nausea, or vomiting
- Skin rashes or allergic reactions
In reality, these symptoms may have completely different medical causes. For example, chest burning may be related to acid reflux, while headaches with nausea could indicate migraine, and skin rashes may be allergic in nature. Labeling all of these conditions as “pitta” can be misleading.
Why self-diagnosis can be a problem
When patients present with a self-diagnosed condition, treatment often becomes symptom-focused rather than cause-focused. Acid-suppressing medicines may give temporary relief, leading patients to believe the problem is resolved. However, without identifying the underlying issue, symptoms can recur or worsen over time.
Temporary improvement does not always mean the condition has been treated correctly—it may simply mean that symptoms have been suppressed.
The right way to explain symptoms to your doctor
Instead of telling the doctor what you think the diagnosis is, it is far more helpful to describe:
- What exactly you are feeling
- Where the discomfort or pain is located
- When it occurs
- How long it has been happening
- What makes it better or worse
Clear communication allows the doctor to differentiate between acidity, gastrointestinal disorders, neurological conditions, or even skin-related problems, and to guide you toward the correct specialist if needed.
The first step toward proper treatment
Accurate diagnosis begins with honest and simple symptom description. Avoid using broad terms like “pitta” and instead explain your experience in plain language. This small step can make a significant difference in reaching the right diagnosis and starting effective treatment.
