How Doctors Classify Varicose Veins

Early Stage: No Visible Disease (C0)

At this stage, there are no obvious varicose veins. Some patients may have very fine surface veins, such as spider veins, but there is no swelling, pain, or skin change. Medical treatment is usually not required at this point.

Mild Visible Changes Without Symptoms

In some patients, veins may appear slightly more prominent than normal, but they do not cause pain, swelling, or functional problems. These changes are often harmless and can be safely monitored without intervention.

Development of Swelling (C3)

As the condition progresses, patients may begin to experience leg swelling, especially after long hours of standing or sitting. This indicates that vein function is being affected and requires closer medical observation.

Skin Changes and Discoloration (C4)

Long-standing vein disease can lead to darkening of the skin, thickening, or itching around the affected area. These skin changes signal more advanced disease and should not be ignored.

Advanced Stage: Ulcer Formation

In severe cases, poor circulation can result in open sores or ulcers, usually near the ankle. This stage requires prompt medical treatment to prevent infection and further complications.

When Treatment Is Not Immediately Required

Not all visible varicose veins need treatment. If the veins are stable in size and do not cause discomfort or swelling, doctors may recommend regular monitoring rather than active intervention.

Warning Signs That Need Medical Attention

Medical evaluation becomes necessary if:

• The veins increase in size
• Pain, heaviness, or swelling worsens
• Skin color changes appear
• Any ulcer or non-healing wound develops
